The biggest thing in this episode is that we get to know a bit more about Cece, however we had already deduced everything about her from her brief appearances so far. She is Jess’ hot best friend, who is far more experienced in the world of dating than Jess is likely to ever be. Cece’s primary role this episode was to convince Jess that Nick totally has the hots for her… based on the direction his feet are pointing.
It is fair to say nothing comes out of the subsequent awkwardness when Jess can’t seem to get this “science” out of her mind that she ditches Nick’s car while they are driving and runs home. The “I think my friend/roommate likes me” story arc has been done to death in the sitcom world – and most have been better than what New Girl has done. Tonight it felt like just another generic sitcom – no real point of difference. I will say that Jess asking “Do i need thicker pajamas?” in response to the situation earned a snigger.
What I did like best about this episode (and the series so far) is Zooey as Jess, she is so charmingly naive, oblivious to the happenings of an adult relationship: apologising to the guys that Cece is extremely “loose” when drunk, and announcing that she is extremely vulnerable demonstrates this marvellously. Obviously the guys, in particular Schmidt and, to a lesser extent, Winston, do everything they can to hook up with the hot, drunk female who is crashing at their apartment. It even results in Schmidt “sheep-dogging” her to his bed, but that’s best left alone I think.
